The effectiveness of a governing body depends on the quality of its governors and in the way they work together and with school leaders. USH is a skills-based governing body which has been led by Andy Hyett as Chair since September 2014.
Andy’s leadership has been invaluable to the school’s improvement agenda, exemplified by Ofsted in their 2016 Inspection Report which said: ‘Governance is strong. Governors hold the head and the senior team to account for driving improvements quickly and successfully’. Andy is a high profile and active member of the Shirley Community and will stay within our education family as Vice-Chair of Jeffrey’s Education Partnership. Andy, thank you for your Chairmanship and your personal advocacy of our continual improvement. Your leadership is underpinned by high expectations for all and as a result of your influence, USH is a happier and more prosperous place for students to learn. Your humility, positivity and values-led leadership has been an inspiration.
I am delighted to introduce Andy’s successor from January; John Barfoot BSc, PGCLT (HE), FHEA. John is an existing governor and is programme head of design and build environment at Solent University. He has worked as a senior lecturer at Solent since 2007. Prior to this, he was the coordinator for the built environment department at Highbury College in Portsmouth. John is also the course leader for the built environment HNC programme, and link tutor for the University’s HNC collaboration with Bournemouth and Poole College. He is also responsible for the development of built environment higher and degree apprenticeships, and the built environment’s programme link with China.
John, we look forward to working with you as our new Chair of Governors.
