20th November 2015

  • Message from Mr Taylor

As the Year 11 mock exams draw to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to commend the year group on their conduct and the resilience that they have shown over the last two weeks.  It is not easy to go through an intense period of examinations, but the students have risen to the challenge.  Staff will be going over the exams to identify how best we can support every student’s learning over the coming months.  It is also worth mentioning the younger students who have been amazingly supportive of the Year 11s throughout the fortnight.  It typifies the sense of community that we hold as a core value at Upper Shirley High.

Whilst on the subject of community, I can’t think of a better example than the memorial service held on 11th November.  I was humbled and proud to have shared the experience with three generations of our community, collectively paying our respects to those who have served and to those who have died defending our way of life.  I would especially like to thank Matty Harman, our bugler, and the School Choir for their emotive performances.

    Mr Taylor
    Deputy Headteacher

  • Remembrance and Grandparent's Day

On 11th November, we were pleased to welcome grandparents to School to help us mark Remembrance Day.  We have included some photographs of the event and would like to thank the grandparents who attended and helped us make the day so special.

  • Hairspray Worskhop

A small group of students from Years 8 to 10 got to experience a tour of the theatre both front and back stage, a musical theatre workshop and a matinee performance of Hairspray at the Mayflower Theatre this week.  The tour involved learning about the history of the theatre, experiencing what it is like to sit in one of the boxes, finding out what the dressing rooms are like, seeing where the orchestra sits in the pit under the stage, learning how the scenery is lifted up and down in the flies above the stage and finally what it is like to stand on the stage in front of nearly 2000 people.

After their tour, the students took part in a workshop about the musical Hairspray which involved learning extracts of songs and routines from the show and performing it at the end of the session.  Whilst having their lunch at the back of the balcony, the students were privileged enough to able to watch the Hairspray cast doing their vocal and physical warm-ups before the show, not something that the general public usually get to see!

Finally they all settled down to watch the matinee performance of Hairspray which was full of uplifting and cheerful numbers with energetic dances and stunning vocal performances.  The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to do it again.
